Choosing Which Record the Evidence Supports for One Patient
What it does
Two source systems disagree about the same case in Provider, and the Policy Analyst has to resolve which reading the record supports. The review opens on the evidence path that links the disputed records to the care or billing decision they inform. A mismatched link can attach the wrong history to a patient, for example a prior authorization tied to the wrong encounter.
The AI resolves the entities, builds the link between the relevant records, and scores how firmly each relation holds. It grounds a reasoned answer and returns a dependency explanation with confidence cues and citations. It flags contradictory sources, records matched to the wrong patient case, and approvals that have expired. The AI never settles a disputed link on its own.
The Policy Analyst accepts, corrects, or escalates the evidence path before it supports the next step. The Compliance Officer enters only when a privacy or regulatory threshold is crossed, such as a link that exposes protected health information. Decision authority stays with the accountable owner, and every rejected inference is logged with a reason, so a repeated mismatch marks the source to correct.
Where the value comes from
Every minute the Policy Analyst spends deciding which of two conflicting sources to trust is a minute a decision waits. The immediate payoff is a faster answer, because the evidence path and its weak-link warnings arrive together. In Provider settings, that moves review minutes per case in the direction the client wants, down.
To build the business case, the client measures three inputs: the annual volume of reviewed cases, the baseline minutes per review, and the fully loaded hourly cost of the reviewing role. Those inputs feed the `transaction_based_time_saving` model, while scope, adoption, and confidence factors turn gross savings into realizable value. Adoption drawn from workflow logs confirms how much of the projected benefit holds.
The remaining streams stay outside the headline number. `review_time_reduction` counts the same reviewer minutes already measured, so it validates the case rather than extending it. `error_rework_reduction` runs on its own `error_rework_cost_avoidance` path and needs a distinct error rate and cost per event before pricing. `process_consistency`, `knowledge_accessibility`, `decision_traceability`, and `exception_visibility` carry no monetization path and no client inputs, so they stay control and audit indicators. Keeping the streams apart keeps the value evidence defensible.
How work changes
Policy Analyst spends less time searching repositories, reconciling duplicate entity names, and asking colleagues for repeated context. Manual tracing of retrieved evidence lineage declines. Spreadsheet-based dependency checks also decline. The role still reviews material outputs before they affect decisions.
The work that increases is more structured. Policy Analyst must review confidence cues, inspect relationship paths, and record acceptance or rejection reasons. The role also contributes examples when graph inference fails. This creates clearer feedback for data owners and AI teams.
Compliance Officer participates only when confidence is low, authority is disputed, or the case crosses defined risk thresholds. The secondary role reviews the dependency explanation and decides whether extra evidence is needed. Routine cases should not move to this role. That keeps expert involvement conditional.
Required skills include graph literacy, source evaluation, workflow measurement, and accountable decision logging. Policy Analyst remains responsible for business judgment within mandate. Freed-up hours are monetizable when demand absorbs capacity, overtime falls, outsourcing reduces, or hiring is avoided. Otherwise, the benefit should be reported as capacity release.
